A background check must be carried out by the FBI and cannot be done through the U.S. Embassy. The Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) centralizes criminal justice information and provides accurate and timely information and services to local, state, federal, and international law enforcement agencies, the private sector, academia, and other government agencies. Please follow the instructions given on the link if you wish for the FBI to complete a check for you https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/abroad/legal-matters/criminal-record-check.html.
Applications for an FBI Criminal History Check must include a set of your fingerprints on Standard Fingerprint Form (FD-258). The fingerprint form can be downloaded from the FBI’s website and printed on standard white paper stock. The fingerprint impressions can be obtained from your local Garda station to be sent to the FBI. You can find your local station and their contact information at https://www.garda.ie/en/contact-us/station-directory/.
