Renew a Passport

Requirements to renew your passport by mail.

You may renew your passport by mail if you can answer YES to all statements below about your most recent passport:

  • I can submit it with my application.
  • It is not damaged (other than normal wear and tear).
  • I have never reported it lost or stolen.
  • It was issued within the last 15 years.
  • It was issued when I was age 16 or older.
  • It was issued in my current name, or I can provide another document such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree that is evidence of my name change.
  • It was not limited to less than the normal 10-year period of validity because I’ve lost multiple passports, or I’ve had multiple damaged passports.

If you do not meet all these requirements, you must apply in person. Please return to the main passport page for further information.

Standard Processing time for passport renewals is up to six weeks.

If you have travel withing two weeks: please follow the instructions here to apply for an emergency passport. 

If you have travel between two to five weeks: please include your booked travel itinerary and list your travel dates in the field required. 

If you meet the above requirements to renew your passport by mail, you must submit the following


  • Incomplete applications cannot be processed and will be returned to sender.
  • Include upcoming travel plans on the 2nd page of the DS-82 application form.
  1. DS-82 passport application form:   Complete print, sign, and date the form.  This form cannot be submitted online. Alternatively, a printable PDF version is available here  (88.5KB), which you can print and fill out by hand.  Forms must be printed one sideddo not use correction fluid as this invalidates the application.  Please disregard the instructions on the form as they are for U.S. citizens applying to renew a passport within the United States.  Please only follow the instructions on this website.
    • If you have previously been issued an Social Security Number (SSN) but do not know your number, please contact the Federal Benefits Unit here to obtain your SSN and acquire a new Social Security card. Please note that your application cannot be processed until you have provided your SSN to the Embassy.
    • If you were never issued a U.S. social security number, you must sign an affidavit to this effect and submit it with your passport application.
      • If you were born outside of the U.S., please also submit a SS-5 application form and original birth certificate with your passport application to apply for your social security number.
      • If you were born in the U.S., please follow the instructions on our website to apply for a social security number.
  2. Current or expired passport: this passport will be cancelled and returned if it is not damaged.
  3. One 2″x 2″ U.S. passport size photo (note this is different from the Irish passport photo size):  No glasses are permitted. Most large pharmacies in Ireland provide this service. Please check all passport photo requirements here.
  4. Pre-paid, self-addressed envelope for the return of your passport:  Please affix a €10.00 stamp to an A5 size envelope for the return of your passport.
  5. Please print and include this mail in passport renewal application checklist with your application.
  6. If you are changing your legal name
    • Original documentary evidence of your legal change of name:  such as an original marriage/civil partnership/divorce certificate, registered deed poll or Irish Gender Recognition Certificate.  Only originals or certified copies will be accepted.  All submitted documentation must be in English.  Documents will be returned to you with your new passport.
    • SS-5 Application Form – complete if you are changing your name on the passport.

Payment can be made online by card/PayPal etc. or through the mail by postal order/bank draft

  1. To pay online: You can pay online using the U.S. government’s secure payment site. DO NOT use any other payments sites. Please note, this is for applications for passport books only.  If you are applying for both a passport book and passport card, or only a passport card, you will need to use the alternative payment option below.
    1. In the name fields, please use your current legal name, even if it is different from the name that appears on your prior passport. If you are submitting a payment on behalf of another passport renewal applicant, please enter their name. All fields are required.
    2. After successfully paying passport book the fee online: you must print out the electronic payment confirmation you receive via email and include it in the package you send to the U.S. Embassy Dublin. If paying online, we cannot process an application without this receipt and your application will be returned to you.
  2. To pay by postal order or bank draft: No expedited service is available outside of the U.S., please do not submit the additional fee for this service. To pay by Euro bank draft/postal order please visit our passport fee page. Please submit your payment in the package you send to the U.S. Embassy Dublin.
    1. Personal checks/cash/dollar bank drafts are not accepted.  Do not write on any part of your Euro bank draft/postal order other than the indicated area.  This will render the payment null and void.

NB: If you wish to apply for a Passport Card payment for the passport card must be made by postal order or bank draft as per the fees on our passport fee page.
